DRAKE ADV CAMPAIGN

When we were asked to direct the Advertising Campaign for snowboard brands Drake and Northwave we couldn’t wait to work with some of the most respected riders in the world like Nick Visconti, Antti Autti and Victor De La Rue. We also had the opportunity to work in a tight relationship with one of our favourite photographers, Matt Georges. We wanted to create a campaign that reflected each of the riders styles and showcased the product designs. So after working with Matt on the direction of the photos we started illustrating them by hand, inspired both be the riders in the pictures and the designs of the products they have chosen to ride. The end result is four very different illustration styles, one for each rider, that are all united together by the claim RIDE YOUR WAY, a declaration of freedom and self expression.

EVERGREEN FEATURED TWICE IN ONBOARD’S TOP SNOWBOARD DESIGNS SELECTION

Europe’s leading snowboard magazine, Onboard, just released an article on their website where the editors selected the best snowboard designs for the 13/14 season. Out of these designs, from all over the world, two of evergreen’s designs were selected: The lowdown from Drake snowboards featuring a true twin tip illustration that can be read from two different angles, creating two opposite meanings, and the Signature Series from Rough snowboards that we drew in collaboration with pro rider Fredu Sirvio. THE Q CAMERA

If you havn’t heard of theQ Camera yet, you must be living under a rock. It’s the world’s first social camera, with functionality and looks that will blow your mind. Here at evergreen we were lucky enough to work with them and we created a cool series of handmade lettering designs, one for each of their amazing claims. The lettering was used on all media, from the website, to corporate identity, to ADV and even on the camera itself!

ENDEAVOR STANDARD SERIES

Having the opportunity of working with canadian brand Endeavor, we wanted to design a series or boards purely dedicated to the core rider. We decided on chairlift slang as our theme and we chose four of the most interesting phrases and made dedicated hand made letterings for each one on the topsheets of the boards. We printed the tops in Pantone’s and went for wood windows for some details, showing off the inside of the board. Where as for the bases we took those snowboarding phrases litterally and tried to imagine what the skiers in the liftline were understanding from our talk. Do you get it?

BASTARD X ROUGH

For 2013-14 Bastard came to us asking for a collaboration with Rough snowboards. We were really interested as Bastard is such a core brand so we got straight to work. First we came up with the claim for the collaboration “UNITED FOR INDEPENDENCE” that states the fact that two independent companies, that in some cases could even be opponents, get together because they believe in something greater. Todd Bratrud took care of the snowboard design while we dealt with the clothing range. We created some pieces designed specifically for urban riding, with longer, skinnier cuts and durable materials. We went for a very aggressive style with our typical hand made tecnique.

ROUGH CATALOG

For the 2013 catalog we had to deal with a much bigger range of products than the previous years. To make sure that people didn’t get confused between the series of products we made double page spreads that featured the product in action and big and strong hand-made typography that explains the mood of every product in few simple words.

FREDU SIRVIO PRO MODEL

We had the pleasure of working with one of our favourite riders, Fredu Sirvio, on his pro-model for Rough Snowboards. The Finnish ripper is really into cartoons so we chose with him to picture a cartoon version of the Reaper on the topsheets and make three different variations. For the base we made a friendly font version and finished off with nice and bright background colors. Fredu is still thanking us to this day for our illustrations!

DOPPIOZERO LETTERING

To promote the Doppiozero new bicycle brand we designed a series of postcards to describe their main values. We created some specific chalk made typographies to go with their product shots. We wanted to go for a very sophisticated, tailor-made style and the feedback was amazing.

DRAKE CATALOG

Drake and Northwave came to us asking for a product catalog and we provided them with a magazine that is full of contents about the brand and the team and also has the product section that acts as their official catalog. We were lucky enough to work with photographer Matt Georges and the brand was really amazed by the final outcome as the catalog magazine proves to be much more appealing than the average catalog.

It’s our second year working on the Garbage Series and this time we opted for a different concept based around the fact that they’ve always been at the forefront of the internet world with all their edits, so we pictured someone viewing the computer, getting blown away by their work. The phrase “It’s the Bomb” worked perfectly for greating an aggressive base design.

FIFTH SEASON

Fifth Season is a Buyer’s Handbook that features all the snowboard products for the coming season and is released once a year in September.
The main challenge was to create a design template that could showcase the products at their best, fit all the necessary information and make it pleasing to the eye, making people want to read it. We opted for a strict color code system to differ the various sections and a set of logos that explain the main characteristics of the products in one simple symbol. The overall design is very light to let the images of the products really stick out while the text isn’t too heavy but perfectly readable.

SEQUENCE SCHOOL DIARY

JPG Edizioni came to us with their new concept of a School Diary based on action sports. We couldn’t have been more enthusiastic and got straight to work at coming up with games, fun illustrations and graphics. We had a great time finding our inner child and remembering what we used to enjoy when we were teenagers. We sure would have loved a Diary like this one to get through those boring lessons! ROUGH WEBSITE 2012

For the 2012 website Rough asked us for something strong and recognizable, we decided to build the website around the concept of an English pub. We organized a photoshoot inside a pub where we shot everything, from products, to riders and even beer bottles. When we had all the photos we needed, we went to the chalkboard and produced a custom made font and all sorts of hand-made graphic elements to use around the site. Then we mixed everything together and produced a site with a strong image that is sure to make an impact on the users. www.roughsnowboards.com

RUN LIKE NEVER BEFORE

Nike Running commissioned us to design a logo for a blog they are sponsoring “Run Like Never Before”. They wanted something fresh and that was connected to running in some way. We opted for a hand made lettering that is composed by a shoe lace. The laces on the ends all go up, as if they were wings, wich is Nike Running’s main visual identity. The Logo is used for the blog and social medias.

OFFICINE DOPPIOZERO

Officine Doppiozero is a small bicycle brand founded by Nike athlete Andrew Howe. He came to us asking for aggressive and contemperary designs. We made a mix between oldschool and newschool to set the brand image apart from the other vintage bike companies but still maintain that hand made feel that goes with the construction of the bikes. We produced everything from the Logo, to bike shields, to apparel, flyers and sticker sets.

DOPPIOZERO BIKE REVEILING

evergreen design house has been working for Nike athletic’s athlete Andrew Howe, for his new bike company, Officine Doppiozero. A couple of weeks ago Andrew, who is also an amazing drummer, was invited to play along side Igor Cavalera from Sepultura. We took the opportunity to check out the concert and also get a sneak peak of the first prototype bicycle. Soon we’ll be posting a whole section on the Doppiozero project so keep you eyes open!

EVERGREEN AT ISPO

This week evergreen headed up to Europe’s biggest winter sports tradeshow, ISPO in Munich. Apart from business talking we took time to have a look round the show for new trends and fashions. Quite a few designs by evergreen could be seen on display at the Drake and Rough booths.

RANDOMITE VIDEO

GARBAGE SERIES

Garbage Gang is a crew of snowboarders from Milan, they claim that their crew all began with a bunch of friends having a meal at McDonald’s. When Rough told us to design a collaboration board we decided to use this story for the graphics and so made “beer” board and “burger” board.

Jessie is the female version of Sequence Snowboarding Magazine. In 2010 we were asked to redesign the logo of the magazine and provide illustrations for the main features. The logo had to be soft and girly so we worked on a very round, hand written logo. For the inside illustrations we wanted to keep the feel of the logo so we worked on different hand drawn lettering, each that reflected the related articles.

FOUNDATION SERIES

This is the original Series for Rough Snowboards. Having set the DO IT YOURSELF theme we decided to keep the topsheets very clean with a simple lettering in the middle of the boards, leaving the rest of the board for people to customize themeselves with stickers, stencils, pens or what ever they prefered. While on the bases we drew giant DIY tools like Marker pens, pencils, cutters and highlighters.

PAPER STOP MOTION

For Rough’s second promotional video we wanted to feature some real snowboarding, but as we didn’t really have any top quality material we decided to go to the mountains shoot loads of sequences with team rider Matteo Ferraris and make a stop motion video with the photos. After 3 days of cutting out photos and 2 days of shooting in our studio, we managed to make a miniature version of the rider come to life on our desk, no special effects included.

BACO MAGAZINE

Under the Creative supervision of Luca Pistono we were given the chance to play around with Baco, an independent, boardsports and lifestyle magazine. It was a great chance to experiment infact we worked on a new graphic Theme for every issue. For one issue we messed around with felt-tip pens, another issue was all made out of large collages and with yet another issue we stuck to the same font throughout but making it out of different materials for every title.

SEQUENCE SUMMER WEEK

REVOLUTION SERIES

In 2011 Rough decided to introduce a new line of top end boards, the Revolution Series. To highlight the top quality of the boards we opted for a cleaner and more professional look compared to the previous boards we had done for them. We did, however, keep the strong messages in our work and decided to at a strong iconography as well. Following the Do It Yourself motto we were inspired by russian revolutionary posters.

In 2011 Rough Snowboards decided to amplify it’s clothing range by introducing more T-shirts and Hoodies. We went for the Pure DIY look with stenciled logo T-shirts, graphics inspired by russian propaganda posters and claims inspired by old punk CD’s.

ROUGH IDENTITY 2011

For 2011 we wanted a really strong message for the brand. We came up with DIY or DO IT YOURSELF which perfectly fits the brands image and with the financial crisis and costs of products snowboarders were really interested in the concept. We wrote down a Manifesto for the website and produced a Zine that explained the movement and also featured the products. We also used typical DIY promotional material like stencils and stickers you had to cut out yourself that express important messages instead of simple brand logos.

THE PILL

The Pill is a Business to Business magazine focused on board sports. It covers behind the scenes news, tradeshows and retail advice. We opted for a large tabloid format and printed it on newspaper. We made a very simple and flexible grid so that it could be applied to any article and tried to make the serious contents interesting by creating colorful infographics.

Every section has a double page illustration where the lettering is directly reffered to the kind of product featured for example ice letters for the board section and letters made out of screws for the binding section.

ROUGH ADV 2010

When we designed the 2010 board range we all ready had the ad campaign in mind. We wanted to express the messages on the boards with small props that the team riders could ride on. It took us a couple of days to build all the props and a night-long photoshoot to get the shots. Then we neatly finished off the pages with hand written typography for the headlines.

ROUGH TRADESHOW 2010

It was the Rough’s first tradeshow so we had to make a big impact. The claim of the brand was “LIVE FOR TODAY” and as the tradeshow was held at halloween we decided to set up the booth as a grave yard with the boards sticking out of uncovered tombs. We wrote “SNOWBOARDING IS DEAD” all over the place to state that if you don’t live for today it will be too late. The Booth was a great success because it was really shocking and all passers by just couldn’t resist taking a better look.

We put obituary posters around the tradeshow
stating that snowboarding was dead
because it was loosing
it’s original essence.

We sent staff around dressed as skeletons
to bring attention to the booth.

The booth worked out
as a perfect eye-catcher.

ROUGH BTL 2010

For 2010 we wanted to give the brand a more aggressive feeling to it. Starting from the Board graphics that influenced the overall image. We wanted to contrast the positive claim “LIVE FOR TODAY” with a very dark image consisting of dark colors, logos made out of bones and blood splatters that would appeal to younger snowboarders.

NIDECKER SNOW FACTORY

When The Swiss brand Nidecker commissioned us to design a children’s snowboard we put ourselves in the mind of a six year old and imagined a fantasy snow factory. Hidden in the clouds lays a factory full of little helpers that prepare snowflakes one by one in an assembly line that starts off with collecting and freezing drops of water and finishes off with little animals sculpting every single snowflake, that’s why there are no identical snowflakes in the world.

ROUGH BOARDS 2009

We wanted the riders to be able to relate to these snowboard graphics. Often messages are more powerful than images that’s why we decided that the main graphic element of the topsheet would be big hand written typography. The messages are strong and often provocative because snowboarders don’t care for sweet talk. The background is made up of hand drawn patterns of illustrations and lettering all related to the main theme of the board. The base is even more powerful, using sign language to express the attitude of the rider.

We wanted the 2010 board range to be much more aggressive than the previous year put still keep the strength of the central messages. We opted for a Carpe Diem theme for the whole range infact it’s all about living the day to the fullest.

Collision Of My Axioms

We took care of the whole identity of hard rock band “Collision Of My Axioms” for their forthcoming full length on Spook Records. including a full screen printed press kit packaging, logo design, a vertical structure booklet as well as three t shirt illustrations. The record and merchandise have all been sold along all Europe.

ROUGH STOP MOTION 2009

For the launch of Rough snowboards 2009 website we decided to do something special. We made a short stop motion showcasing the whole range of boards, focusing on their graphics. It was a very long process as every frame is drawn by hand but a great satisfaction to see our first stop motion come to life.

ROUGH ADV 2009

When we were asked to design a ad campaign for Rough snowboards we decided that we wanted to do something a bit different compared to the average snowboard ad which usually consists of just an action shot with a logo. Other than the action shot we also wanted the viewer to see the athlete as a person and highlight the illustrations of the snowboards. We managed to do this by shooting portraits of the athletes holding a poster of them selves in action and shooting them on a background featuring the board graphics. Everything is studied in detail, from the backgrounds to the logos of the athletes.

Along side the 2009 Board range, Rough produced a very limited range of T-shirts, a Catalog made in the form of postcards and display props for shops. The patterns on the boards made an excellent graphic element for all of these materials.
